Not only since 2018 have activists and citizens’ movements been fighting against the continued destruction of the Hambach Forest by RWE, a corporation that to this day continues to act with apparent disregard for the signs, insights and scientific evidence of our time.
In 2018, our friend, the Aachen-based art professor Wolfgang Becker, called us and asked whether we would like to engage artistically with the trees facing destruction and the events unfolding in the Hambach Forest.
Since then, we have been putting all our energy into helping ensure that the forest can remain standing and survive.
Through our art interventions, we contributed to increasing public pressure on the corporation and the political structures supporting it—pressure that ultimately helped ensure that the forest itself could no longer simply be cleared and destroyed.
What the corporation and political authorities are currently attempting, however, is becoming increasingly difficult to put into words.
If the situation were not so serious, one might be tempted to compare the behaviour of the corporation and political decision-makers to that of a stubborn and wilfully ignorant child who simply refuses to listen—and whom one nevertheless has to try to help.
We all continue trying to help, yet these efforts are repeatedly met with blatant disregard.
We remain persistent and continue our work.
In 2020, the Haus der Geschichte in Bonn acquired one of our paintings dealing with the Hambach Forest complex for its permanent collection.
