Around one third of the office and commercial space in Frankfurt’s skyline of skyscrapers and high-rise buildings stands vacant. Yet construction continues, as if there were not already enough.
In 2019, Frankfurt recorded an unenviable nationwide record: along the city’s four-lane arterial road, leading from the eastern outer ring into the city centre and running directly alongside a green oasis—the oldest allotment-garden settlement in Germany—the highest temperatures measured anywhere in Germany during the summer of 2019 were recorded.
Now, an international investment fund plans to build yet another 20-storey high-rise on the site of Frankfurt’s GRÜNE LUNGE (GREEN LUNG).
From the Green Lung, one looks across the road at the high-rise buildings opposite—which, naturally, have themselves stood largely vacant for years.
The power of money is immense. Opposing it are the people who live here.
As everywhere where ruthless and potentially corrupt entanglements between politics and business threaten people’s living environment, greater public pressure is needed.
That is why, following an invitation from ENDE GELÄNDE – FRANKFURT, we decided to make an artistic statement here as well—using our painting to contribute to the public debate.
