WILL THERE BE SNOW …?

During the winter of 2026, I created a series of small paintings, each measuring 40 × 50 cm, executed in oil on canvas. These works perhaps speak to our deeply rooted longing for peace—for the reassuring feeling that everything is as it should be—and to our desire for a life lived in harmony. All of these aspirations are distilled into the quiet language of the Impressionist winter landscape.

I titled the series Will There Be Snow …?, borrowing the question that returns every autumn and has, in our time of climate uncertainty, become increasingly urgent—and increasingly tinged with apprehension.

A Sunday walk through a park or forest covered in snow, followed by coffee and cake: a harmonious sequence, a familiar ritual, perhaps an instinctive attempt by city dwellers to restore balance in lives that are often demanding and unsettled.

For each of us, in one way or another.

This quiet triad finds its reflection in the paintings. They became small jewels—works that grew through calm, attentive, and affectionate brushwork. Particular care was devoted to observing the behaviour of light. Remarkable trees, each with its own distinctive presence and interplay of form, stand beneath a clear blue winter sky, illuminated by the crisp cold, becoming the central protagonists of the painter’s gaze.

What a luxury, one might think, in a world marked by crises, wars, anxiety, and uncertainty.

Or perhaps not a luxury at all, but a necessity.

A century ago, during the years of the two World Wars, some painters continued to create beautiful landscapes and were criticised for producing such images in such times. Today, in what are once again difficult times, I understand that criticism—and with this body of work, I chose, very consciously, to do exactly that.
